How to Generate Ideas for New T-Shirt Designs

It can be tough to generate ideas for t-shirt designs can be a difficult process. With a seemingly never ending number of options, it’s hard to know where to get started or what designs to try next.

There’s no single formula for coming up with great ideas for new designs and you’ll need to figure out what works best for you. Anytime someone writes to us looking for tips, we always tell them to start with topics they know. Three’s no point trying to sell designs if the topic isn’t something you know well. While there’s a chance you may find a great design, odds are not in your favor.

When you pick subjects you know something about, you’re much more likely to know what makes a good design. You’ll have some understanding of the target audience and what may work for them.

Once you have some topics in mind, check to see what’s popular. Here’s a few places you may want to search.

  • Merch Search – our free tool for searching Merch by Amazon listings
  • T-shirt sites (bustedtees, zazzle, redbubble, teefury and dozens of others)
  • Pinterest
  • Google images

Look for ways to improve upon existing ideas, create spin off ideas, or combine with other topics to niche down within a subject.

Once you have a few ideas, try creating a few designs on your own – or order some custom t-shirt designs. One of the added benefits of picking a topic you know is that you’re likely to know others interested in the subject as well. Send them your listings, whether on a marketplace or your own site, and see what they think. Keep trying until you find some winning designs.
